Frescoes in the Panagia Drossiani Church

The church of the Panagia Drossiani, meaning Dewy Virgin, is the oldest Christian church of Naxos. Located near Moni, it is also considered one of the most important Byzantine churches and is therefore of immense historical significance. This church dates back to the 6th Century AD. We walked in, taking our time looking at the painting in the dimly lit interior. Near this fresco is evidence of damage in the 1956 earthquake that struck the nearby island of Santorini.

Naxos is a city and a former municipality on the island of Naxos, in the Cyclades, Greece. Naxos is also the name of the largest island of the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea, which has constituted a place of significance since the prehistoric era and, according to mythology, is where Zeus was raised.
