Petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock State Park

This was a surprising little find, along the highway into the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. There are hundreds of individual petroglyphs that have been identified along this small 200-square-foot rock face at Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument in Utah. With so many "writers" over so many years, it is almost impossible to "read" the inscribed petroglyphs, but it's fun trying nonetheless.

Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument is a Utah state monument featuring a rock panel carved with one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs. The park is located in San Juan County, Utah, along Utah State Route 211, 28 miles (45 km) northwest of Monticello and 53 miles (85 km) south of Moab.
