Travel Diary

When travelling my constant companion is a notebook and pencil, where I can jot down thoughts or observations about what I see or feel. This Travel Diary is a cleaned-up version of some of the notes that I take during my travels. Oftentimes, they are posted while I am still travelling. Their purpose is to give a sense of travel apart from a more structured article.

Frankfurt to Bad Neuenahr, Germany by Train

Sun Oct 16, 2016

Riding on the train from the airport in Frankfurt, the line follows the Rhine River on its western bank. It's not a high speed line, along the route the hills are covered by vineyards, with castles at their peaks, as if watching over them or extracting a toll from the river travellers. On the river below them is a lively flow of boats; cruise ships, barges and tankers, among others. Occasionally the train passes through centuries old villages. I change trains in Koblenz, and again in Remagen (where Patton first crossed the Rhine in 1945) for Bad Neuenahr.

The trees are full and green with a the distinctive yellows and reds of fall, with the fall colors just at about their peak. There are plenty of fallen leaves along the footpaths, with the weather slightly chilly and overcast. Coming from a hot summer in Arizona, I found it refreshing.

It's very hot - 7:10pm at 106° F - we have just come out of the hottest week of the year so far. I'm out testing a new lens - the Sigma 24mm f 1.4 Art. This is the first non-Nikon lens I have bought in years; it's supposed to be very sharp, and I'm keen to find out. This trip is in preparation for my trip to Germany next month. I'm excited, it's my first trip to Germany since 2003.

The desert is very quiet, no other cars or people at the trailhead. The heat really keeps people indoors or near one of the lakes. Not surprisingly; I haven't been anywhere for months myself. I'll go again in October. I love the stillness of the desert and the heat isn't too bad when there isn't any direct sunshine.
